Nowadays, there are many more formats and options in how to DJ as opposed to the original days of just using wax. This is separated in three main categories:

Vinyl / Turntables
CD DJ / CD Decks
Digital / Laptop DJ

Once you have your chosen format figured out you then want to obtain the extra equipment.

Mixer
Headphones
Speakers
Sub / Bass Bin (optional)
Amplifier

If you are laptop DJ or digital DJ you will additionally need a decent soundcard and midi/audio interface to enhance sound performance from your computer.
